Robert Smalls (April 5, 1839 – February 23, 1915) was an American member of parliament, publisher, businessman, and Maritime prefatory.

Born into slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina. He freed bodily, his friends, and their families during the American Civil Conflict. He did this by grabbing a Confederate transport ship, CSS Planter, in Charleston harbor, orderliness May 13, 1862. He substantiate sailed it from Confederate-controlled humor of the harbor to representation U.S.

Early life
